The chart that follows will give you a check list of troubles most likely to show up in a carburetor, together with their remedies. Always make sure first, however, that the difficulty does not lie in the pump or fuel lines.

Finding and Fixing Troubles in the Carburetor

 Sympton and Probable Causes

Remedy

 Poor Idling
Idle air bleed cabonized  Dissassemble carburetor. Soak air bleed in suitable solvent. Clear with compressed air.
Idle discharge holes plugged  Soak main and throttle bodies in suitable solvent. Clear with compressed air.
Throttle body carbonized, shaft worn  Check for wear; replace if necessary
Damaged or worn idle-mixture needle  Replace needle, adjust air mixture
Incorrect fuel level  Adjust to correct float level
 Carburetor Floods or Leaks
Cracked body  Replace body. Tighten screws
Defective body gaskets  Replace defective gaskets, check for leak.
High float level  Correct float level
Worn needle valve and seat  Clean and inspect needle valve and seat
Excessive fuel pump pressure  Test pressure, if necessary, replace.
 Poor Acceleration
Accelerator pump by-pass corroded  Clean and inspect; replace if necessary
Accelerator pump faulty  Clean and inspect; replace if necessary
Incorrect fuel level  Correct fuel level
Automatic choke not operating properly  Clean and inspect; replace if necessary
Heat-control valve stuck  Free up stuck manifold valve.
 Poor Performance
Restricted air cleaner  Remove and clean
Excess oil in air cleaner  Remove, clean, and refill to proper level.
Leaking float  Replace leaking float. Check level.
High float level  Correct float level.
Excessive fuel pump pressure  Replace fuel pump assembly
 Worn metering jet  Replace jet
Choke heat tube opening plugged  Remove choke heat tube, drill out.
